Former Residence of Ma Hongkui

The former residence of Ma Hongkui is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Ma Hongkui is located at No. 1–4, Jingning Li, Hebei Road. Built in 1913, the alley has a total of four entrances. It is a two-story brick-and-wood building of a common apartment style, featuring exposed brick walls, sloping tile roofs with skylights, ordinary furnishings, and a total floor area of 760 square meters. It is now used as residential housing.

Ma Hongkui (1892–1970), courtesy name Shaoyun, childhood name Sanyuan, was an ethnic Hui from Yangwashan, Hanji Town, Linxia County. He was the eldest son of Ma Fuxiang. Influenced by his family’s emphasis on education and martial training, he studied and practiced martial arts from an early age. At the age of 18, he entered the Gansu Army Officer School. During this time, he participated in anti-Qing activities, secretly joined the Tongmenghui (Revolutionary Alliance), and was arrested and imprisoned by Qing troops. He was later released on bail thanks to the efforts of Ma Fuxiang. Subsequently, Ma Fuxiang ordered him to join the military, where he served as an instructor for the "Zhao Wu Army," as well as deputy commander of the cavalry battalion, leading troops to block Bai Lang. Yuan Shikai awarded Ma Hongkui the rank of Major General in the Army for his meritorious service in suppressing Bai Lang.
