Peacock Terrace

Peacock Terrace derives its name from the long Han Dynasty Yuefu poem "The Peacock Flies Southeast," also known as the Ten-Thousand-Year Terrace. Legend has it that it was the place where Jiao Zhongqing and Liu Lanzhi pledged their love. Along with Nanjing’s Phoenix Terrace and Wuhan’s Yellow Crane Tower, it is hailed as one of the “Three Spirits of the Yangtze River Basin.” Since ancient times, there has been a saying: “When in Anqing, you must climb the pagoda; when in Xiaoshi, you must visit the terrace.” Inscriptions record that the terrace was first built in the late Tang Dynasty as an earthen mound platform. During the Yuan Dynasty, a bamboo shed was erected on the mound and covered with bamboo mats. In the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, the base was constructed with stone slabs, and the main structure was built with brick and wood. By the mid-Qing Dynasty, it was renovated into a theater stage. Various trades would invite opera troupes to perform here on specific dates, for periods ranging from a few days to over ten days or even half a month, giving rise to a unique local cultural phenomenon. Unfortunately, the original terrace suffered severe damage during the Cultural Revolution.

It is also reported that the restored Peacock Terrace stands 13 meters tall, with a total floor area of 200 square meters, and the terrace base along with the front plaza covers an area of 15 mu.
