Sunjiacheng Site
The Sunjiacheng Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The Sunjiacheng Site is located in Suguang Village, Miao Temple Town, Huaining County, Anqing City, Anhui Province. The site stretches approximately 750 meters from east to west and about 430 meters from north to south, with an earthen wall encircling its eastern, western, and southern sides, and the Dasaha River to the north. The cultural layer varies in thickness from 1 to 8 meters, with cultural remains scattered throughout the 320,000-square-meter area within the city walls. The site is home to two villagers’ groups: Fei Wu and Sun Cheng. Local legend has it that Cao Cao of the Three Kingdoms period gave birth to Cao Pi here. Artifacts collected from the site include stone axes, stone shovels, ring-shaped stone tools, tripod feet, pottery shards, and more. The earthen wall is built purely of yellow earth and is the only surviving ancient earthen wall site in Huaining County. The cultural remains found within the city have been identified by experts from the Provincial Institute of Archaeology as dating back to the Neolithic Age. Their cultural attributes belong to the Xuejiagang culture type of Qianshan, providing excellent physical evidence for the developmental sequence of the Xuejiagang culture. According to the findings and stratigraphic analysis, no remains from the Shang, Zhou, or later periods have been discovered, suggesting that the earthen wall dates back no later than the Shang and Zhou dynasties—or was built around the same time. This makes it a rare physical resource for studying contemporary earthen wall sites. In May 2013, it was designated and announced by the State Council as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
The Sunjiacheng Site is currently the largest and best-preserved known site in southwestern Anhui, and also the only other known Neolithic-age city site in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River besides the Liangzhu Ancient City. It establishes the chronological sequence of cultures predating the Xuejiagang culture in this region, spanning from 6,000 to 4,000 years ago, along with its three distinct phases, making it a vital material for studying the origins and development of the Xuejiagang culture.
