Former Residence of Pan Yugui

The former residence of Pan Yugui is a cultural relic protection unit of Tianjin Municipality.

The former residence of Pan Yugui was purchased by him from Bao Guqing and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Minzu Road and Bo’ai Avenue. It is a two-story building in Italian style. The central part of the building protrudes, enhancing the symmetry of the façade, and the architectural design and spatial treatment are highly distinctive, with a composition that bears the legacy of the Renaissance. It is an outstanding example of modern residential architecture in Tianjin.

Pan Yugui (1884–1961) was the mayor of Tianjin under the Japanese puppet regime. His courtesy name was Yansheng, and he was from Yanshan County, Hebei Province. In 1935, he served as the head of the Administrative Affairs Office of the Hebei-Chahar Political Council under Song Zheyuan. In June 1935, he colluded with Shi Yousan and Bai Jianwu to instigate the “Beiping Autonomy” rebellion. During the July 7th Incident in 1937, he repeatedly betrayed the battle plans of the 29th Army to the Japanese army, leading to the fall of Nanyuan and the tragic death of thousands of student soldiers.
