Nankai Xiangyu Park serves as a patriotic education base.

Nankai Xiangyu Park is situated in the triangular area at the intersection of Nankai 2nd Wei Road, Nankai 3rd Ma Road, and Nankai 4th Ma Road, neighboring Nankai High School. Covering around 29,000 square meters, the park is themed around greenery and is planted with a variety of green plants and seasonal flowers, including French sycamores, ginkgos, silk trees, cedars, Albizia trees, as well as peach and plum trees symbolizing “talents flourishing across the land.” Inside the park, there are structures embodying its cultural essence, such as the Pillar of Talent sculpture, bronze statues of notable figures, and the Nankai Centennial Monument. In 2006, it was designated as a Tianjin Patriotic Education Base by the municipal Party committee and government.

In 2011, Nankai District carried out an upgrade and renovation of Xiangyu Park. The renovated park added 407 new trees and is divided into four scenic areas: Petal Shower, Teachings of Talent, Cultural Entertainment, and Leisure Plaza. At the southernmost end of the park lies a sunken plaza recessed into the ground, where the central structure of the park—the red Pillar of Talent sculpture—stands tall. The sculpture is a stylized representation of the Chinese characters “Nankai,” resembling a towering tree reaching upward, symbolizing that students of Nankai will become the future pillars of the nation. Adjacent to the theme plaza, a blue glass water pool is surrounded by three bronze statues of influential figures in Nankai High School’s history—Zhou Enlai, Zhang Boling, and Yan Fansun. These exquisitely crafted, lifelike statues encapsulate the cultural essence of “a century of Nankai.”

The park also houses the Nankai Centennial Monument, which features carvings of key figures in Nankai’s history along with textual descriptions, chronicling the school’s 100-year legacy. It condenses the essence of Nankai culture and vividly presents it to the public. The Centennial Monument was inscribed with its title by the renowned mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern. Measuring 20.04 meters in length and 4.8 meters in height, the monument consists of three stone slabs arranged together. The overall design of the monument, along with its inscriptions and five relief sculptures, narrates Nankai’s century-long journey through form, characters, and images.
