Tianjin Li Chun Ancestral Hall

Introduction        Located on Nanfeng Road in Nankai District, it is now repurposed as the Nankai People's Cultural Palace. The building was constructed between 1913 and 1923, covering an area of 25,600 square meters, making it the largest antique-style structure in Tianjin. The ancestral hall faces south and is composed of three successive courtyards in the front and a garden at the back. It includes a brick screen wall, stone memorial archway, stone arch bridge, main gate, front hall, theater stage, middle hall, rear hall, side halls, and corridors. The complex is grand in scale, rigorously laid out, and exquisitely decorated. Originally, the building served as the residence of Liu Jin, a powerful eunuch from the Ming Dynasty located outside Xizhi Gate in Beijing. It was purchased by Li Chun, the military governor of Jiangsu Province, dismantled, and then transported to Tianjin where it was reassembled. Li originally intended to build a private estate, but due to the massive scale of the project, Yuan Shikai sent people to investigate. After bribing officials with a large sum of money, he repurposed it as a family ancestral hall.
