Changhong Ecological Park

Changhong Ecological Park is located under the overpass at the intersection of Changjiang Avenue and Hongqi Road in Nankai District, Tianjin. It is the first free public park in Tianjin. Originally named Wandou Park, it covers an area of 33.9 hectares, including 12.5 hectares of water surface. A rockery stands at the entrance, with a lake to the right and weeping willows shading the shore. Green space accounts for 97.5% of the entire park. The western part of the park features amusement facilities such as a children’s playground and a roller skating rink, designated as the recreation area; the southern part, South Lake, is the boating area. In the northwest corner of the park stands Qinnen Pavilion, a gathering place for visitors and venue for cultural activities. Adjacent to it is a large underground amusement center—Fenghua Palace, with a construction area of 3,319 square meters, integrating entertainment, rest, and shopping.

Inside the park stands a memorial for the founders of the four major early Tianjin Pingju opera schools, inscribed with the life stories of Li Jinsui, Bai Yushuang, Liu Cuixia, and Ailianjun.

Changhong Park has completed the demolition of outdated buildings and facilities, as well as the reshaping of terrain, transplantation of trees, and construction of waterway embankments. Infrastructure has also been established for the west gate entrance, LanShengXuan Pavilion, Nanping Mountain, Lansheng Corridor, Jiangnan Residential Area, Cui Xin Island, Taohua Island, waterfront embankments, and four scenic bridges, laying a solid foundation for full-scale project development.

Located in the central-northern part of Nankai District, Changhong Park is bordered by Jinhe River to the east, the Middle Ring Road to the west, Changjiang Avenue to the south, and Huanghe Avenue to the north. Opened in 1986, the park covers 33 hectares, including 20 hectares of green space, 7 hectares of water bodies, and over 50 plant species. As a simply constructed park, Changhong originally featured limited plant variety, monotonous terrain, an unbalanced spatial layout, and a lack of scenic depth. After more than 20 years, the park's facilities have aged, and illegal structures have severely encroached on green areas, making it incompatible with current goals of building a garden city and an ecological city.

The new Changhong Park will be designed according to four key principles: "landscape gardening, southern Chinese architecture, plant landscaping, and ecological planning." The layout is divided into six functional zones: sightseeing and leisure, health and sports, plant appreciation, water activities, subtropical greenhouse viewing, and management services, along with an activity plaza that can accommodate 3,000 people. It is reported that the green space of this ecological Changhong Park will reach 215,000 square meters, with an additional 19,500 square meters of water area, allowing visitors to take boat rides to enjoy the scenery of a classic Jiangnan water town within the park.
