Wanshou Chan Temple

Located atop Jing Mountain within the Jing Mountain Scenic Area, Wanshou Chan Temple is a Buddhist temple of the "Linji School." It was first built in the third year of the Tang Dynasty's Dali era (768), featuring a north-south layout with a total construction area of 6,400 square meters. Historically acclaimed as the foremost among the "Five Mountains and Ten Monasteries of Jiangnan," the temple is situated on Jing Mountain at an altitude of 518 meters. The temple complex includes structures such as the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, Scripture Repository, Dining Hall, Meditation Hall, Dharma Hall, and Ancestral Hall. Cultural relics preserved at the site include the Emperor Xiaozong’s Tablet Pavilion, Dragon Well Spring, Giant Bell of Jing Mountain Temple, Iron Buddha, Iron Incense Burner, and Stone Pagodas. The main hall, the Mahavira Hall, was built during the Sui Dynasty, featuring a double-eaved roof with carved beams adorned with dragon head decorations, as well as a circular bronze mirror on the rooftop. The hall is 25.6 meters wide and 24.10 meters long. Jing Mountain Temple is internationally renowned for its tea culture, and it shares a friendly history with Japan spanning over 700 years. Japanese Linji School Buddhism regards Jing Mountain Temple as its ancestral temple, and it has traditionally been considered the birthplace of the Japanese tea ceremony. Many historical scholars and literati have visited the site, including Su Shi, Lu You, and Fan Zhongyan, who all left poetic writings behind.
