The Memorial Room of Martyr Zhang Tailei is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

The Memorial Room of Martyr Zhang Tailei was established in 1997, the centennial year of the birth of the revolutionary pioneer Zhang Tailei. Located within the First Teaching Building of Tianjin University, the 60-square-meter room is themed “Revitalizing Education and Strengthening the Nation through Red Heritage.” It is divided into seven exhibition sections: “Childhood,” “Studies at Beiyang,” “Participation in Founding the Communist Party and the Youth League,” “Engagement in the International Communist Movement,” “Commitment to Kuomintang-Communist Cooperation,” “Dedication to Revolution and Sacrifice in Youth,” and “Immortal Legacy and Enduring Example.” A total of 99 precious photos and 15 artifacts related to Zhang Tailei are on display, among which his graduation certificate and the blanket he once used hold significant cultural and historical value.

Comrade Zhang Tailei was one of the early key leaders of the Communist Party of China, a co-founder of the Communist Youth League of China, and an outstanding leader in the youth movement. In December 1915, Zhang Tailei enrolled at Peiyang University, the predecessor of Tianjin University. While working as a translator for the newspaper North China Star, he met the Russian sinologist Pavel Boulac, was influenced by the October Revolution and Marxism, and began studying Marxist-Leninist theory. During the May Fourth Movement, as one of the core members in Tianjin, he actively organized fellow students to conduct patriotic propaganda in urban and rural areas, participated in demonstrations, and resisted reactionary police. In 1921, Zhang Tailei accompanied representatives of the Communist International to hold talks with Li Dazhao and Chen Duxiu in Beijing and Shanghai, contributing to the founding of the Communist Party of China. In June of the same year, he attended the Third Congress of the Communist International as a representative of the CPC. In August 1922, he participated in the CPC Central Committee meeting in Hangzhou, advocating for Kuomintang-Communist cooperation and the establishment of a united front against imperialism and feudalism. He served as an alternate member of the Fourth CPC Central Committee, a full member of the Fifth CPC Central Committee, and was elected as an alternate member of the Provisional Politburo of the CPC Central Committee at the August 7th Meeting. In 1927, Zhang Tailei served as commander-in-chief of the Guangzhou Uprising. On December 12 of that year, while on his way to the front lines to direct battle operations, he was ambushed by enemy forces and died a heroic death at the age of 29.

On August 1, 1985, Tianjin University erected a statue of Zhang Tailei and named the main road in front of the statue “Tailei Road.” On important anniversaries such as the 100th, 110th birthdays of Martyr Zhang Tailei, and the 80th anniversary of his martyrdom, Tianjin University has held events including the “Photo Exhibition on the Life and Deeds of Martyr Zhang Tailei,” the “Centennial Memorial Cultural Performance for Zhang Tailei,” the “Symposium Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Revolutionary Pioneer Zhang Tailei,” and the “Commemoration of the 115th Birthday of Martyr Zhang Tailei,” attracting over 30,000 visitors. In 1998, it was designated as a Tianjin Patriotic Education Base by the municipal Party committee and government.
