The Remains of the Hydraulic Engineering System Outside the Liangzhu Ancient City is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The large-scale hydraulic engineering system outside the Liangzhu Ancient City is located in the periphery of the city, which was discovered in 2007. Through stratigraphy and radiocarbon dating technology, it has been confirmed that this hydraulic system dates back to the Liangzhu period, approximately 5,000 years ago.

The hydraulic system is located within the territory of Pingyao Town, Yuhang District, Hangzhou, on the northern and western sides of the Liangzhu Ancient City. It consists of 11 dams in total and served as an organic part of the city’s external planning and design at the time of the ancient city’s initial construction. From the eastern end of the Tangshan Long Dike on the northern side of the ancient city to the westernmost Beehive Dam (No. 11), the distance is 11 kilometers; from the northernmost Shiwu Dam (No. 10) to the southernmost Wutonglong Dam (No. 5), the distance is 5.5 kilometers. The straight-line distance from the center of the Liangzhu Ancient City to the farthest Beehive Dam is approximately 10 kilometers.

Pingyao Town: The town administers 14 incorporated villages and 4 communities, with a population of 53,838 and an area of 128.81 square kilometers. In 1997, it was listed as a pilot town for comprehensive reform in small towns in Zhejiang Province. In 2000, it was designated as a central town in Zhejiang. In 2004, it became the first “National Health Town” in the Hangzhou area and was listed as a key town for small-town development in China by six national ministries.
