Siyuan Hall at Nankai University

Siyuan Hall at Nankai University is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Siyuan Hall is situated within the campus of Nankai University at No. 94 Weijin Road, Nankai District, Tianjin, and is currently recognized as a historically significant architectural structure under key protection. It was built in 1923 and completed in 1925, serving as a science building funded by the Rockefeller Foundation of the United States and entrepreneur Yuan Shuzhi. After its completion, it functioned as the Science Building, also known as the science teaching facility. The entire three-story structure features Western classical architectural style and was the most exquisitely designed building on campus at the time. It now serves as the Second Teaching Building, used by the Nankai University School of Medicine.

Siyuan Hall is a three-story mixed-structure building with a fair-faced red brick exterior. Its main façade features an entrance portico supported by six columns, and the building’s façade is symmetrical. It is a Western-style structure characterized by classical architectural features.

Siyuan Hall is located to the south of the central garden within the Nankai University campus. Originally built in 1923 and completed in 1925, it served as the Science Building, or science teaching facility, and was the most exquisitely designed building on campus at the time. The entire structure embodies Western classical architectural style and consists of three stories, with the lower level half-sunken underground—essentially a basement. In front of the elevated entrance are six large Roman stone pillars, and beside the doorway are two ornate lamps. The lampshades face upward and feature unique designs; their bronze frames gleam brilliantly, lending the building a majestic and luxurious appearance.

On October 7, 2019, Siyuan Hall at Nankai University was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
