Hangzhou’s Nine Creeks and Misty Trees

Nine Creeks and Misty Trees, also known as the famous scenic spot “Nine Creeks and Eighteen Ravines,” is one of the New Ten Scenes of West Lake. It is located at the foot of Chicken Comb Ridge in the mountains west of West Lake. The water of the Nine Creeks originates from Yangmei Ridge, and along its course, it converges with streams from various mountain valleys including Qingwan, -, Tangjia, Xiaokang, Foshi, Baizhang, Yunqi, Zhutou, and Fangjia, meandering and appearing and disappearing as it flows into the Qiantang River.

The “Eighteen Ravines” originate from Longjing Mountain, weaving through forests and valleys between Poet Isle, Sunwen Ridge, and Chicken Comb Ridge, gathering countless streams. The waters of the Nine Creeks and Eighteen Ravines follow the contours of the mountains, and the mountains come alive because of the water. Here, the mountains and trees are all enlivened by these crisscrossing, winding yet ceaselessly flowing “waters,” creating a breathtaking scene: “Mist-shrouded green mountains with low-hanging white clouds, myriad ravines competing to flow down the Nine Creeks,” and “layer upon layer of mountains, winding roads around every bend, tinkling springs, and trees at varying heights.” The Eighteen Ravines refer to the many small streams, with murmuring spring waters. The Nine Creeks and Eighteen Ravines converge in front of the Stream-in-Stream Restaurant at the foot of Bajue Mountain. Along the way, there are overlapping peaks, scattered tea plantations, winding paths, gurgling streams, and chirping birds. On sunny days, the scenery is feast for the eyes; on overcast days, mist and clouds drift ethereally.

The Ming Dynasty poet Zhang Li praised it: “Spring mountains veiled in mist with low-hanging white clouds, myriad ravines competing to flow down the Nine Creeks.” The Qing Dynasty scholar Yu Yue wrote after visiting: “Layer upon layer of mountains, winding and curving roads, tinkling springs, and trees at varying heights.” Both capture the boundless beauty of “Nine Creeks and Misty Trees.”

Jiuxi Community: Jiuxi Community was established in March 2001, formed by the merger of the Liuheta Neighborhood Committee, Jiuxi Neighborhood Committee, and Wangjiashan Neighborhood Committee.

The community is located within the renowned West Lake Scenic Area, situated at the foot of Wuyun Mountain by the Qiantang River. It stretches from the area near Hupao Road’s Xiaotianzhu and Bailitaoling’s Longqiao in the east, follows the Qiantang River south to Meijiawu and Fancun, reaches up to Jiuxi and Eighteen Ravines in the north where it connects to Longjing Village, covering an area of 10.5 square kilometers.
