The former residence of Lin Fengmian in Hangzhou is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level.

The former residence of Lin Fengmian is located within Renshou Mountain Park. It is a French-style house that Mr. Lin Fengmian personally designed and built in 1934. After renovation in 1999, it was opened to the public for visitation. The residence exhibits works by Mr. Lin Fengmian from various periods and retains the original layout, including his studio and other furnishings.

Lin Fengmian was one of the founding figures of modern Chinese art education. He was born in 1900 in Meixian County, Guangdong Province. He began studying painting at the age of 6 and went to France for further studies after graduating from middle school. In 1928, he founded the National Academy of Art (the predecessor of today’s China Academy of Art). During the War of Resistance against Japan, he moved inland, and after the war, he returned to Hangzhou. He passed away in 1991.

The residence exhibits works by Mr. Lin Fengmian from various periods and retains the original layout, including his studio and other furnishings.

Protected area: East to approximately 15 meters outside the heritage structure, south to the southern boundary of the greenbelt on the south side, west to approximately 10 meters outside the heritage structure, north to approximately 15 meters outside the heritage structure, covering a total area of 1,879 square meters.

Construction control zone: East to the western boundary of the small path east of the wooden structure on the east side, south to the northern edge of the existing road, west to the 10-meter contour line, north to the 15-meter contour line, covering a total area of 7,713 square meters.

Lin Fengmian was a master painter who blended Chinese and Western painting techniques, but he followed an artistic path distinct from that of Xu Beihong.

Lin Fengmian (1900–1991) was born into a farming family in Meixian County, Guangdong Province. His grandfather was a carpenter, and as a child, Lin Fengmian assisted him while learning calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. At the age of 18, he went to France for work-study programs and began studying oil painting.
