Maojiabu

Introduction: Located west of West Lake, historical records from Wulin Jiushi indicate that the area was originally inhabited mostly by families surnamed Mao, who made a living by picking tea leaves and raising silkworms. It also served as the dock where pilgrims traveling to Lingyin Temple would disembark from boats. As a result, during peak pilgrimage and ancestor-worship seasons, people would arrive from all directions by water, and this area thrived with bustling trade and numerous taverns and teahouses. In contrast, present-day Maojiabu has become a rare tranquil spot along the bustling shores of West Lake. Strolling along winding wooden pathways amidst sparse bamboo groves and reeds, or listening to the breeze in a thatched pavilion, brings to life the “lightly made-up” beauty of West Lake.
