Mourning Pavilion

Introduction: Exiting the Quyuan Fenghe Garden, you will see the Mourning Pavilion by the Xiling Bridge. The pavilion’s namesake, Su Xiaoxiao, was a renowned songstress from Qiantang during the Southern Qi Dynasty, known for her intelligence and beauty. One day, while out in her carriage, she encountered the handsome young scholar Ruan Yu riding a horse on Bai Causeway, and the two fell in love at first sight. Later, Ruan Yu was summoned back to the capital by his father, who was an official there, and never returned to Hangzhou. Su Xiaoxiao, known for her self-respect, died of depression after being bullied by local officials and aristocrats. After her death, Bao Ren, the governor of Huazhou (Zhenjiang), who had once received financial help from her to pass the imperial examinations, buried her by the Xiling Bridge—where the Mourning Pavilion now stands. Transportation: Take bus routes 7, 27, 81, 850 or Y1, Y2, Y3, Y9 and get off at Geling Station.
