Zhongshan Park in Hangzhou

Zhongshan Park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is located on Gushan Island in West Lake. The pair of white marble lions in front of the park gate are relics from the Ming Dynasty — the one on the left is a male lion, and the one on the right is a female lion. In 1927 (the 16th year of the Republic of China), it was named in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The park was built on the site of an imperial garden from the Qing Dynasty and includes the Zhongshan Memorial Forest and the Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion. The layout of the park is exquisitely designed, blending natural scenery (views of Gushan Island) with man-made structures (pavilions and secluded paths).

Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925), whose given name was Wen, courtesy name Zaizhi, also known as Rixin and Yixian, with the childhood name Dixiang and alias Zhongshanqiao, often used the name Zhongshan. He was born into a farming family in Cuiheng Village, Xiangshan County (now Zhongshan City), Guangdong Province. During his youth, influenced by the revolutionary traditions of the people of Guangdong, he aspired to the cause of the Taiping Rebellion.
