Prince Zhaoming's Hermitage

It is said to be the place where Prince Zhaoming Xiao Tong of the Liang Dynasty studied. Located at the foot of Zhaoming Peak to the northwest of Chan Yuan Temple, it is shaded by bamboo paths and dotted with mountain springs that sparkle like jade. The hermitage covers an area of about 5 mu. Its gate tower is inscribed with the words “Embracing Greenery, Flowing in Color.” Within are relics of Prince Zhaoming: the Study Tower, also known as the “Wenxuan Tower,” where Prince Zhaoming composed the *Wenxuan Literary Anthology*, hence the name. The “Wenxuan Tower” was originally built during the Ming Dynasty, featuring a brick-and-wood structure with carved reliefs and elegant yet rustic woodwork. Inside the Study Tower is an ancient well called the “Prince’s Well,” which never dries up year-round. To the east of the Study Tower lies the “Eye-Washing Pool,” which, according to legend, was used by Prince Zhaoming to wash his eyes after they became irritated from studying sutras. After washing them in the pool, his vision reportedly recovered.
