Longjing Garden

“Up in heaven there is paradise, down on earth there are Suzhou and Hangzhou.” The beauty of Hangzhou is easy to imagine. With its cloud-wrapped mountains on three sides and the city embraced by a winding lake, Hangzhou’s picturesque landscape leaves a deep impression on both domestic and international visitors. The Longjing tea from West Lake in Hangzhou is especially praised by travelers, drawing countless tea enthusiasts to the area every year. Su Dongpo once praised Longjing tea in his poem: “New tea shoots beneath the white cloud peaks, lush green hues lasting fresh through Grain Rain spring.”

Tea is the national drink, and Hangzhou is the capital of tea. Thus, the Hangzhou Pavilion at the International Horticultural Exhibition, aimed at promoting traditional tea culture, was named “Longjing Garden.” In its design, Longjing Garden emphasizes the theme of traditional tea culture while incorporating Hangzhou’s urban leisure culture, highlighting an elegant and rustic “tea garden mountain retreat” ambiance rooted in the Jiangnan region.

Covering an area of approximately 2,000 square meters, the Hangzhou Pavilion is designed based on the natural beauty of Jiangnan-style gardens, with “tea” as the central theme running throughout the entire space.

Within “Longjing Tea Garden,” the main landscapes include mountains, pavilions, wells, lakes, and mountain lodges. The main entrance features a rustic wooden-framed gate that evokes a sense of the wilderness. Upon entering the garden, visitors will see a stone wall screen. The entrance screen, along with the tea pavilion and teahouse, form a triangular spatial relationship with varying heights. Other features, such as the “Ancient Longjing Path,” the “Longjing” stream, and the “Hupao Spring,” also revolve around the themes of “tea” and Jiangnan landscape, each reflecting to varying degrees the long history of Hangzhou’s tea culture. The lake in the garden is surrounded by continuous greenery, blooming flowers and trees, and the gentle sound of flowing streams, offering visitors a serene experience that makes them linger without wanting to leave.

Longjing Village: Located southwest of the West Lake Scenic Area, Longjing Village is surrounded by mountains on all sides, sloping from north to south. The village has a permanent population of about 800 people and nearly 800 acres of high-altitude tea plantations. To the northwest of the village, Beigaofeng (North Peak), Shizi Peak, and Tianzhu Peak form a natural barrier, blocking the cold northern winds. To the south lies Jiuxi (Nine Creeks), a deep and wide valley that leads directly to the Qiantang River. The warm southeast winds of spring and summer easily enter the valley, and the area’s ventilated geographical conditions provide ideal advantages for the growth of Longjing tea.
