Tomb site of Niu Gao
The original tomb of Niu Gao was demolished during the 1955 clearance of graves on Solitary Hill. It was rebuilt in 1983 and renovated again in 1987. The current tomb is located at the entrance of Ziyun Cave at Jianmen Pass on Qixia Ridge by West Lake in Hangzhou. It faces east and is built in a circular arched shape, with stone slabs lining the base and earth mounded on top planted with grass. The tomb is 3.5 meters in diameter and 1.8 meters high. — A circular low wall surrounds it, nestled against the mountain and beside the path. In front of the tomb stands a stele inscribed with “Tomb of Niu Gao, Duke Fuwen of the Song Dynasty.” A two-pillar single-bay stone memorial archway is built at the beginning of the tomb path. Both the tomb stele and the stone archway were erected during the renovation.
Volume Nine of New Chronicles of West Lake records: “The Tomb of Niu Gao, Duke Fuwen of the Song Dynasty, is located south of Ziyun Cave on Jianmen Ridge, newly built.”

Niu Gao (1087–1147), courtesy name Boyuan, was a native of Lushan in Ruzhou (now Lushan County, Pingdingshan City, Henan Province). He was a famous anti-Jin general of the Southern Song Dynasty. Niu Gao came from a peasant family and initially served as an archer, mastering martial arts with outstanding skill in horseback archery. In the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty, he gathered people to resist the Jin. In the third year of the Shaoxing era (1133), he joined Yue’s Army and the Ever-Victorious Army. Niu Gao wielded a pair of twin iron clubs, which were originally made by the Jin. Later, he was assigned under Yue Fei and highly regarded by him, repeatedly achieving military merit in battles against the Jin. He also participated in the suppression of Yang Yao’s rebellion. After Yue Fei was executed, Niu Gao was killed by Qin Hui due to his consistent opposition to peace negotiations with the Jin.
