Zhijiang Campus of Zhejiang University is located on the picturesque YuLun Mountain by the Qiantang River and adjacent to the Liuhe Pagoda. Before the liberation, it was the site of Hangchow University, a Christian university jointly founded in Hangzhou, China, by the Northern and Southern Presbyterian Churches of the United States. It is also one of the thirteen Christian universities in China. Its predecessor was the Chongxin Academy, established in 1845 (the 25th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty) in Ningbo. In 1867 (the 6th year of the Tongzhi reign), the Chongxin Academy moved from Ningbo to Hangzhou. In 1887, it was renamed Yuying Academy, and in 1897 it officially became known as "Yuying College" (Hangchow Presbyterian College). In 1907, new school buildings were constructed on YuLun Mountain, and in February 1911, the campus was officially relocated there. Due to its location at a bend in the Qiantang River, forming a “Zhi” shape, it was renamed Zhijiang Academy. In 1914, with the realization of plans to establish Hangchow University, it was again renamed Hangchow Christian College. In 1951, it was taken over by the Cultural and Educational Department of Zhejiang Province, and American faculty members left the school and returned to their home country. In 1958, after Zhejiang University established its Department of Nuclear Physics, the campus became part of Zhejiang University, initially named the Department of Physics and Radio Engineering of Zhejiang University, also referred to as the “Third Division of Zhejiang University.” In 1992, with approval from the former State Education Commission, the base department was built here as a key project included in the national “Eighth Five-Year Plan.”

In 2006, the Kwang Hua Education Foundation in Hong Kong donated 100 million RMB to support the Law School of Zhejiang University. The following year, the Law School was renamed the Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University and relocated to the century-old campus — the Zhijiang Campus of Zhejiang University.

The Zhijiang Campus covers an area of 650 acres, with a total building floor space of 70,000 square meters. It currently houses the Guanghua Law School of Zhejiang University and the Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences of Zhejiang University.
