Shigongguan

Shigongguan is a cultural relic protection unit of Cixi City and a classic red tourism attraction.

After the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan in 1945, Chiang Kai-shek tore off the mask of peace talks and blatantly launched large-scale military offensives against various liberated areas and revolutionary bases across the country. In order to implement the Party Central Committee’s strategic shift from defense to —, in 1945, the East Zhejiang Guerrilla Column was ordered to withdraw northward. The reactionary Kuomintang forces took the opportunity to move in, and — once again enveloped the Sanbei region. Faced with the armed guerrilla and mass struggles led by the CPC Cizhen County Working Committee, the reactionary Kuomintang launched frenzied political and military campaigns of suppression in the Sanbei area, throwing the region into chaos with watchtowers erected everywhere. In order to thwart the enemy’s suppression plans, the CPC Cizhen County Working Committee, with the assistance of underground party member Mi Xinguan from the Mi Family Dang area, discovered a natural cave on the northern slope of Meishan Mountain. Leveraging the cave’s advantages of providing concealment and facilitating communication, they turned it into a secret office for the CPC Cizhen County Working Committee, where several important meetings were held. Comrade Xue Ju, head of the Organization Department of the Siming Special Working Committee, also visited the cave to convey directives from the higher Party organization. The leaders of the Cizhen County Working Committee made this cave their revolutionary refuge and optimistically dubbed it the “Stone Mansion.”

From the winter of 1947 to the eve of the nationwide liberation, the CPC Cizhen County Working Committee, based at the “Stone Mansion,” led local Party organizations and revolutionary masses in carrying out in-depth anti-suppression struggles. They repeatedly foiled the reactionary Kuomintang’s attempts to crush the revolutionary forces in the Cizhen area, expanded and strengthened the revolutionary armed forces, and made positive contributions to the strategic — of the nationwide Liberation War.

The “Stone Mansion” is located in the steep cliffs along the northern slope of Meishan Mountain in Changming Village, Guanhaiwei Town, Cixi City. It is a natural cave formed by several irregular massive rocks. The cave entrance faces northwest, with a height of 2.3 meters, a depth of 3.5 meters, and a bottom width of 1.9 meters.

The “Stone Mansion” is a historical testament to the Party’s leadership of the people’s armed struggle during the Liberation War. In May 1985, the People’s Government of Cixi County renovated the surrounding environment of the “Stone Mansion” and built a 1-meter-wide, 350-meter-long stepped stone path, installing steel pipe guardrails at dangerous cliff edges. In the same year, Zhang Sen, a contemporary Chinese calligrapher, inscribed the name plaque for the “Stone Mansion.” The left wall of the cave features an engraved inscription titled “Record of the Stone Mansion”: “In the winter of 1947, in order to advance the people’s guerrilla war under the suppression of the reactionary Kuomintang, the CPC Cizhen County Working Committee discovered this cave among the rock formations on the northern slope of Meishan Mountain and designated it as the secret headquarters of the Working Committee, naming it the ‘Stone Mansion.’ Located at the heart of the Cizhen area, Meishan is densely forested with pines and bamboos and rarely frequented by people, making it suitable for both communication and concealment. Many important meetings of the Working Committee were held here. Revolutionaries dwelled in the wilderness, with the world in their hearts, relying on the masses and persisting in the struggle for over a year. They repeatedly thwarted the enemy’s political and military suppression campaigns, expanded the people’s strength, and wrote a glorious chapter in the history of the Cizhen people’s liberation struggle.”

In 1986, the People’s Government of Cixi County designated the “Stone Mansion” as a second batch cultural relic protection unit.
