Chen Zhifo Memorial Hall

The Chen Zhifo Memorial Hall is located at Chen Zhifo’s former residence on Xiaojibei Lane, Hushan Subdistrict, Cixi City. It was established in the residence to showcase Mr. Chen Zhifo’s life and artistic achievements.

The residence spans 957 square meters and is divided into two main sections—north and south. The southern part includes three bays that form the main building, with the front half of the central bay serving as a living room, complete with tables, chairs, display stands, tea sets, and plain cups. At the center hangs a portrait of Chen Zhifo, flanked by calligraphy and painting scrolls gifted to the residence by his disciples and followers. The southern side bay has been converted into an exhibition room dedicated to Chen Zhifo, displaying photos, letters, manuscripts, and works from various stages of his life. The walls are adorned with illustrated panels introducing his life story and accomplishments during different periods. The northern side bay served as his bedroom.

The memorial hall has hosted numerous significant commemorative events and art exhibitions, and has received a large number of visiting leaders, experts, and art enthusiasts from across the country.

Chen Zhifo (1896.9.23–1962.1.15), from Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, was a modern art educator, craft artist, and painter. In 1916, he graduated from the Textile Department of Hangzhou First Industrial School and stayed on to teach pattern design. In 1918, he went to study the craft and design department at Tokyo Art School in Japan, becoming the first Chinese art student to specialize in crafts abroad. He founded the Shangmei Pattern Design Studio. He successively served as a professor at Shanghai Art University, Shanghai Art College, and the Art Department of Nanjing Central University, as well as professor and head of the Art Department at Nanjing University.
