At the bustling eastern end of Jiefang Street in Hushan, there extends an alleyway that continues eastward. A few steps down this lane leads to a south-facing passageway gate. Stepping through, you enter a world apart — an old house resembling a traditional northern-style courtyard home comes into view. Few people would know that this is the birthplace of Lu Yongxiang, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, a renowned engineering scientist, academician, and current President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

This quiet courtyard, unassuming in appearance, now serves as staff housing for the Cixi People’s Hospital. But in its heyday, it held significant importance. The main building to the north is a two-story structure with wide doors and windows, and three distinctive 0-shaped windows on its sloped roof that stand out vividly — setting it apart from traditional Cixi residential architecture. This was once the site of the Hushan Hospital, founded by Lu Yongxiang’s father, Mr. Lu Nianci. To the east and south of the courtyard are rows of single-story houses, their walls resting on large bluestone foundations about a foot high, smooth and intact as ever. To the west stands another two-story building. The spacious courtyard is paved with bluestone slabs, shaded by a towering camphor tree on the west side that blocks out the sun, while a well on the east side remains much the same as before. It was here that Lu Yongxiang spent his joyful childhood, and this expansive home may well have been the paradise of his early memories.

Relevant departments in Cixi are currently planning and designing to turn the site into a memorial museum of the former residence.
