Baiyang Martyrs' Cemetery

Surrounded by lush green mountains, clear waters, and verdant pines and cypresses, the cemetery features glazed-tiled tomb chambers and bluestone-paved walls, creating a solemn and respectful environment where revolutionary martyrs rest in peace and future generations come to pay their respects. Established in 1966 and subsequently renovated twice, this martyrs' cemetery is now a patriotic education base in Cixi. Every year during Qingming Festival and "July 1st," workers, farmers, and students from all over gather here to honor the revolutionary martyrs, commemorate their heroic deeds, and inspire patriotic sentiments.

From the lakeside road of Baiyang Lake, one can see the cemetery, nestled against the mountain and facing the lake, from afar. After climbing 42 steps, you reach the main gate of the cemetery. Two majestic stone lions guard either side of the gate, above which six gleaming characters read “Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery,” exuding an air of noble integrity. On the east inner side of the gate is an exhibition room introducing the life stories of over 20 martyrs. In front of the tombs lies a square planted with pines, cypresses, and magnolia trees, providing a space for mourning. There are two gates on either side, each bearing a couplet. The east gate features a seal script couplet: “Drive away darkness to revive China, a heart of loyalty never fades; resist invaders to protect the homeland, the people’s righteousness endures forever.” The west gate has a regular script couplet: “Looking back at the arduous journey, without sacrifice there would be no happiness; remembering the martyrs’ noble spirit, though landscapes may change, their glory remains eternal.” The horizontal scroll reads “Leave a Lasting Legacy.”

Like spring rain nourishing the earth, with fresh grass turning green, the lake and mountains are blessed to cradle these loyal bones. The martyrs’ spirit of self-sacrifice for the nation will forever be worthy of learning from and remembrance.
