Former Site of Gaogongxing Sauce Workshop

The former site of Gaogongxing Sauce Workshop is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing City.

The former site of Gaogongxing Sauce Workshop is located at No. 233, Southwest Street, Xincheng Town, Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing City. It was founded in the 33rd year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1768) by Gao Jinghan, an ancestor of the Gao family. Facing south and backing north, the storefront faces the street and borders the river, covering a total area of 1,063 square meters. It primarily produced and sold traditional local specialties such as hard-shelled fermented duck eggs, yellow wine, and pickled radishes. Currently, only the gate tower, retail sales building, accountant’s office, residential quarters, and warehouse remain. The retail sales building is a two-story, three-bay structure made of brick and wood, featuring large wooden components and intricately carved beams and brackets. To the south of the retail sales building is the accountant’s office, also a two-story, three-bay brick-and-wood structure. The warehouse faces north and is a three-bay, five-rafter raised-beam style building. In 1956, during the public-private partnership movement, Gaogongxing merged with several other private sauce workshops—including Zhang Hengchang, Dasheng, Donggongxing, and Donghenglong—to form the Xincheng Brewing General Factory. After the 1980s, the “Gaogongxing” brand was revived and the business reopened to the public. As a traditional workshop for local specialties that had considerable influence in the Jiaxing area, although the architectural appearance of Gaogongxing Sauce Workshop has not been well preserved, its survival for over 200 years is rare and highly valuable. It holds significant historical importance. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 2009.
