Guojie Bridge
Guojie Bridge is a protected cultural relic site of Jiaxing City.
Guojie Bridge is located in Group 7, Honghe Village, Honghe Town, Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing City. Built in the 16th year of the Jiaqing reign during the Qing Dynasty (1811), it is a three-arched, railing-free stone slab bridge that spans Jiuli Port from north to south. The bridge is 18.6 meters long and 1.59 meters wide, consisting of three parallel stone slabs, with the largest single slab spanning 5.68 meters. The bridge bears inscriptions on its east and west sides reading “Guojie Bridge,” while the bridge pillars are engraved with couplets: on the west side, “Tracing the distant waves of Fuyu, the dignified style of Tai Bo endures forever”; on the east side, “Stars shine over the Dipper and Ox, celebrating the magpies; the land connects Wu and Yue, dividing the great divide.” The arches and body of the bridge are adorned with decorative motifs such as curled lotuses, and the inner sides of the bridge pillars feature carved stone statues—one of King Wu to the north and one of King Yue to the south—rendered with simple and classic lines. Historical records from various dynasties in Jiaxing indicate that Guojie Bridge was situated on the ancient battlefield of the Wu and Yue states. According to Records of the Grand Historian and Zuo Zhuan, in 496 BC, the states of Wu and Yue fought at Zuili, where King Helü of Wu died in battle. Zuili was the name of a place in Jiaxing during the Spring and Autumn period, and the area around the current site of Guojie Bridge was historically known as Nanbei Caodang, or the ancient Zuili region. In 1959, a large number of horse bones, arrowheads, and ancient weapons were discovered in the vicinity of Guojie Bridge, spread across a wide area. The existence of Guojie Bridge not only facilitated local transportation but also provided tangible evidence for the study of the ancient history of Wu and Yue, holding significant historical and scientific value. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site of Jiaxing in 1981.
