Tomb of Shen Zengzhi

The Tomb of Shen Zengzhi is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing City.

The Tomb of Shen Zengzhi is located in the Shenwan Cemetery at Group 9, Taipingqiao Village, Wangdian Town, Xiuzhou District, Jiaxing City. There are four tombs in total, all with circular mounds facing south, covering an approximate total area of 600 square meters. From west to east, they are the tombs of Shen Zengzhi, his grandfather Shen Weiqiao, his father Shen Zonghan, and Shen Zonghan’s daughter. The tomb mound of Shen Zengzhi is 2.7 meters high with a diameter of 4 meters; Shen Weiqiao’s tomb is 2.7 meters high with a diameter of 4 meters; Shen Zonghan’s tomb is 2.3 meters high with a diameter of 3.15 meters; and Shen Zonghan’s daughter’s tomb is 1.8 meters high with a diameter of 3 meters. At the four corners of the cemetery, there were originally boundary markers, but only one remains today. It bears the regular script inscription “Shenwan Tomb Boundary” and stands 1.65 meters tall and 0.325 meters wide. In 2009, the Tomb of Shen Zengzhi was renovated and restored to a new condition. A spirit way now leads directly to the tomb site, surrounded by upright pine and cypress trees, with neat and uniform circular mounds. Shen Zengzhi was a great Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty with profound attainments in Confucianism, law, history, music, and calligraphy. He exerted extensive influence both domestically and internationally. His tomb serves as a tangible witness to his life and has important commemorative significance, as well as high historical value. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 1981.
