The First Bridge of Danghu

The First Bridge of Danghu is located at the northern entrance of Anji Lane on West Small Street in Danghu Subdistrict. It is a three-arch stone bridge that spans the city river (also known as Hantang River) from north to south.

The bridge is 26.3 meters long and 3.35 meters wide. The central arch has a span of 8.6 meters and a rise of 5.2 meters, while the side arches have a span of 4.7 meters and a rise of 2.75 meters. The inscriptions “The First Bridge of Danghu” and “Reconstructed by Local Residents” are engraved on the bridge plaques on both sides. There are 19 steps on each of the north and south approaches, and the railings are complete, all plain in design, 50 cm high and 20 cm thick, without any spacer columns. The arches are built using the method of segmental voussoirs laid side by side. There are four couplets inscribed on the bridge pillars: the southeast pillar reads “The lake meets the Zheshui River, a single cry heralds the top scholar’s rise”; the northeast pillar reads “Its reflection touches the cloud ladder, opening miles of journey for the flying steed”; the southwest pillar reads “Majestically guarding the western pass, the circling waters gather refined beauty”; and the northwest pillar reads “Grace welcomes the northern palace, as talents step in succession toward illustrious halls.”

Danghu Subdistrict: Danghu Subdistrict is the seat of the Pinghu Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government. It is located at the eastern end of the Hangjiahu Plain in northern Zhejiang Province, bordering Hangzhou Bay to the south, Shanghai to the east, and Nanhu District of Jiaxing City to the west. The area is designated primarily as a commercial and residential hub. Since ancient times, Danghu has enjoyed favorable weather, abundant produce, prosperous people, and a rich cultural heritage, making it a renowned “land of fish and rice” in the Jiangnan region.
