Nanhetou Historic and Cultural District Nanhetou, historically known as Mingkeli, is located on both sides of Nanhe (commonly referred to as Ganhe) in Danghu Subdistrict, presenting the traditional water town layout of two streets flanking one river. Most of the buildings in the area were constructed in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, featuring either post-and-lintel construction or a combination of post-and-lintel and raised-beam styles. Some of the older streets, such as Yangju Lane, Beita Lane, and Yan Shang, still largely retain their original appearance. The roadsides along the river maintain their original stone pavement, while the stone revetments along both banks are neatly stacked with strip stones. Riverside docks are half-submerged in the water, and the ship noses beside the docks are exquisitely crafted and well-preserved. Along the 250-meter-long stone path, there were once residences belonging to several prominent local families, including the Mo, Ge, Zhang, Lu, Chen, and Xu clans. Today, the area still houses a large resident population and is recognized as one of Jiaxing’s model civilized communities. In February 2000, Nanhetou was designated as a provincial-level historic and cultural preservation district.
