Haiyan Nanbei Lake
Haiyan Nanbei Lake is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
A mountain need not be high — if it is home to an immortal, it will be famous. A lake need not be deep — if it has a dragon, it will be spiritual. Nanbei Lake, this natural gem, embodies the essence of mountains and water, and gathers the richness of culture and history. In 2004, it was honored as Zhejiang’s “Best Leisure and Holiday Destination.”
Nanbei Lake, China’s only scenic area that integrates mountain, sea, and lake, is located within Haiyan County on the northern shore of Hangzhou Bay, Zhejiang Province. It is among the first batch of provincial-level scenic areas in Zhejiang, and one of the first national AAA-level tourist zones. Nestled at the center of major cities such as Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Ningbo, it is just 120 km from Shanghai, 80 km from Hangzhou, and 110 km from Suzhou. With its superior location and convenient transportation, Nanbei Lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the sea on one. Covering an area of 30 square kilometers, it consists of five scenic zones: Hutan, Sanwan, Yingke Ding, Tanxian Ridge, and Binhai. A causeway stretches across the lake, dividing it into north and south sections. Though not deep, the lake winds gracefully and includes islands within. To the south lies the sea, where the world-renowned Qiantang River Tides originate. Here, visitors can admire wonders such as the source of the tides and the “Stone Sail Mirage,” as well as enjoy beachside activities. The surrounding mountains are lush and continuous, with forests of pine, bamboo, tea, and citrus — creating a picturesque scene of emerald hues and distant blue ridges cradling the shimmering lake, offering poetic landscapes of lake and mountain beauty.
Hiking up to Yingke Ding offers panoramic views of the mountain, sea, and lake. On the first day of the tenth lunar month, you can even witness the rare spectacle of the “Sun and Moon Rising Together” in the southeast. The scenic area also features the world’s smallest stone fortress, “Tanxian Stone City”; the thousand-year-old Yunxiu Temple, known as the “Nighttime Putuo”; the Art Museum of renowned landscape architect Chen Congzhou, the Huang Yuan Library, and the Wuyue Kings Park... In spring, peach blossoms and willows are green, flowers bloom competitively, and tea trees sprout anew. Summer brings shaded woods, blooming lotuses, and opportunities for lake and sea adventures. Autumn paints the land golden, with sweet osmanthus in the air and oranges weighing down the branches. In winter, Yingke Ding is blanketed in clear snow, the mountains turn white, and the mountain-sea-lake vista becomes one harmonious scene. Whether hiking, enjoying the sea, sipping tea, tasting oranges and bamboo shoots, joining thrilling outdoor team-building activities, organizing sightseeing conferences, or simply relaxing — it’s all here at Nanbei Lake. Transportation: Direct buses to Nanbei Lake depart from Haiyan Bus Station from 6:00 to 17:40, every 5–10 minutes.
