Awkward yellow rubber duck alert！A 3-meter-tall white duck stands in a “snow” world at Beimen

“Keelung has its yellow duck, Beimen has its white duck!” The Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan Coastal Scenic Area Administration used sea salt to create a 3-meter-tall white duck in the Jingzijiao Salt Fields at Beimen, Tainan. Surrounded by salt fields, the duck appears as if it’s standing in a “snow world.” Its head sways gently with the wind, and nearby, over a hundred Q-version mini ducks are arranged around the white duck, creating an adorable scene.

The Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan Scenic Area Administration used nearly 30,000 kilograms of coarse sea salt to transform the Jingzijiao Salt Fields into a silvery white snow world. They also invited sculptor Zhuang Bishang to create the 3-meter-tall white duck using sea salt, Styrofoam, and fiberglass materials. The project took 20 days and cost NT$200,000. The duck’s most distinctive feature is its head, which sways flexibly with the wind, mimicking the cute bobbing motion of a real duck walking.

The scenic area administration noted that the locally made white salt duck has a more distinct Taiwanese character. The vast white landscape created with salt, coupled with the recent cold weather, makes visitors feel as if they’ve entered a snowy country. There are also over a hundred smaller salt ducks placed around the large white duck, resembling a mother duck with her ducklings—an overwhelmingly cute sight.

To coincide with New Year’s Eve, the scenic area administration will hold a “Sunset Send-off” event starting at 4:30 p.m. on December 31 at Jingzijiao. The event will feature a water drum show and a 14-meter-long fluorescent fire-breathing dragon performance, inviting the public to bid farewell to the last sunset of 2013 together.
