Yuyuan Garden

Yuyuan Garden is located on Fuxing Road in the southeastern part of Gulangyu Island. It was built to commemorate Lin Qiaozhi (1901–1983), a renowned Chinese obstetrician and gynecologist. The garden covers an area of 5,700 square meters, with a naturally harmonious layout of structures.

A white marble statue of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi sits on the stone terrace of Yuyuan Garden. With a kind expression and simple attire, she appears as warm and approachable as a loving mother. The “Dr. Lin Qiaozhi Life and Achievements Exhibition Room” displays over 100 photos of her life in study, work, and daily living, as well as many items she used. Two Norfolk Island pines planted by Comrade —— in the garden symbolize Dr. Lin’s refined and noble character.

Dr. Lin Qiaozhi was born into a family of teachers on Gulangyu Island. She graduated from Peking Union Medical College in 1929. Known for her high medical ethics and exceptional skills, she personally delivered over 50,000 babies and treated countless gynecological patients throughout her life, yet remained unmarried.
