Zhang Leping Memorial Hall

Zhang Leping Memorial Hall is located within the "Sanmao Amusement Park" on Xin Qiao North Road in Wuyuan Town.

The entire park covers an area of 29 acres and is divided into five scenic areas: the front garden area, the memorial hall area, the children's activity area, the lake island area, and the original children's park.

In the front garden area stands a 26-meter-tall bronze statue of Zhang Leping and "Sanmao" gazing and smiling at each other. The base of the statue is inscribed with Zhang Leping’s handwritten words: “A big tree grows from a small sapling; we must carefully nurture the saplings.” To the front right of the front garden area is the "Zhang Leping Memorial Hall," with its plaque inscribed by the literary master Ba Jin.

The memorial hall is a two-story building with six exhibition halls, one display room, and one creation studio. The exhibits include photos and written materials about Zhang Leping’s life and achievements, as well as 500 cartoons representing his masterpieces such as "Sanmao’s Wanderings," "Sanmao Loves Science," and "Erwazi." There are also donated artworks created by Zhang Leping’s close friends and renowned cartoonists and calligraphers such as Hua Junwu, Ding Cong, Shen Roujian, Cheng Shifa, Xie Zhiliu, and Fang Cheng, which are preserved and displayed in the hall.

Zhang Leping Memorial Hall has been designated as a Patriotic Education Base of Jiaxing City and Haiyan County. The Chinese Artists Association’s Cartoon Art Committee awarded it the title of “China Children’s Cartoon Base,” marking Haiyan County—the hometown of “Sanmao”—as the country’s first children’s cartoon creation base.

Background: The master cartoonist Zhang Leping was born in Haitang Township, Haiyan County. The character he created—Sanmao—has been widely known across China for decades.

In 1983, the Haiyan County Government established the "Sanmao Amusement Park" to commemorate the eminent cartoonist, the “Father of Sanmao,” Zhang Leping. In 1988, the county government expanded the park, completing the project in May 1995.
