National Go Sage Court
The National Go Sage Court is located on Prime Minister’s Mansion Style Street in Yanguan Town. It was once the gathering place of two of China’s most outstanding Go masters over the millennia, Fan Xiping and Shi Xiangxia. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong and Jiaqing eras, it became a venue where Go players met to exchange skills, teach students, and share the game. Emperor Qianlong also played Go here with the two masters and bestowed upon it the imperial name “Tianyuan Tower.”
At that time, the four most renowned Go masters — Fan (Xiping), Shi (Xiangxia), Liang (Weijin), and Cheng (Lanru) — gathered here, and many literati and scholars came to compose poetry, paint, enjoy tea, and play Go.
Historically, Haining has produced many Go masters, making the National Go Sage Court a sacred site for the game in China. The name “National Go Sage Court” was inscribed by Yuan Mei, a great literary figure of the Qing Dynasty. In his “Epitaph for Fan Xiping,” he referred to Fan as “a sage of Go.”
