A junior high school student fell into a coma during an extracurricular activity and eventually passed away; police have launched an investigation

Weibo user “aqmimi” posted today: “On the afternoon of February 26, an accident occurred at Nan Yuan Middle School in Haining City.A student suddenly fell into a coma during physical training on the playground. Although the teacher performed artificial respiration and the student was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment, she could not be saved.”

Subsequently, reporters verified with the Haining Education Bureau in Jiaxing that the student who suffered the tragedy was indeed a female student surnamed Wang, aged only 15, from Nan Yuan Middle School in Haining City.

Yesterday afternoon, all ninth-grade students at Nan Yuan Middle School participated in the “Sports & Arts 2+1” activity (the eighth class period). During the activity, a student from Class 8, Grade 9, Xiao Wang, suddenly fell into a coma while running on the playground. Teachers at the school found her and performed artificial respiration. Soon after, an ambulance arrived and took Xiao Wang to Haining People’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Local media in Haining interviewed the doctor who treated Xiao Wang yesterday. Su Xuhong, head of the Medical Affairs Department at Haining People’s Hospital, said that there is a four-minute golden window for rescue after breathing stops. By the time Xiao Wang was brought to the hospital, her breathing had already stopped and the optimal rescue window had been missed. Doctors performed CPR for over an hour but were unable to revive her.

At 5:41 p.m. yesterday, doctors pronounced Xiao Wang dead due to cardiac-related causes.

Reporters from Zhejiang Online learned that the “Sports & Arts 2+1” program is a course designed to develop students’ overall quality during junior high school, aiming to cultivate two sports skills and one artistic talent. Yesterday, Xiao Wang participated in the running course, where students were required to jog slowly for three laps around a 300-meter track.

Xu, the principal of Nan Yuan Middle School, explained that if students feel unwell, they can ask the teacher for leave and opt out of the activity. However, Xiao Wang did not ask for leave either before or during the class yesterday. “The incident happened suddenly, and all the teachers at the school are deeply saddened,” she said.

According to insiders, Xiao Wang had asthma and it is suspected that a relapse of her old condition may have led to the tragedy. Xu, the principal of Nan Yuan Middle School, said that after the incident, the homeroom teacher communicated with Xiao Wang’s parents, and her mother mentioned that the child had a history of asthma. However, doctors have not yet reached a definitive conclusion about the cause of death.

As of press time, relevant departments in Haining are handling the aftermath, and the public security authorities have launched an investigation.
