Xu Zhimo’s Former Residence
Xu Zhimo’s Former Residence is a cultural tourism attraction.
This was the former residence where Xu Zhimo, a renowned modern Chinese poet, essayist, and leading figure of the Crescent Moon School, and his wife Lu Xiaoman briefly lived after their marriage. The residence was built in 1926 as a small Western-Chinese style building.
The residence covers a construction area of 600 square meters, with two courtyards, a main building with three rooms over two floors, and east and west wing buildings at the front. The rear building also has three rooms, with a terrace on the roof that can be accessed.
Above the entrance gate of the residence is an inscription by Jin Yong, the poet’s cousin, reading “Former Residence of Poet Xu Zhimo.” The main hall features a plaque inscribed with “Anya Hall,” rewritten by Qi Gong.
The ground floor of the main building displays exhibits on Xu Zhimo’s family background, life, thoughts, and literary activities, showcasing the poet’s brief yet brilliant life. The main hall, bedroom, and study are arranged in restored displays, recreating the poet’s home environment and living spaces.
Xu Zhimo’s Former Residence is located in the middle section of Ganhe Street in Xias Stone Town, Haining City. It is a small Western-Chinese style building constructed by his father, Xu Shenru, for Xu Zhimo and Lu Xiaoman’s marriage. Xu Zhimo and Lu Xiaoman lived here after their wedding. The main building has three rooms over two floors, with east and west buildings at the front. The ground floor main hall is a Chinese-style sitting room, while the east and west wings feature exhibits on Xu Zhimo’s family background, life, thoughts, and literary activities, showcasing the poet’s brief yet brilliant life. The upper floor’s east side houses the newlyweds’ room and the “Mei Xuan” study; the west side includes the bedrooms of Xu Zhimo’s parents and his ex-wife Zhang Youyi, all arranged in restored settings. The rear building’s roof has a terrace offering views of the eastern and western hills of Xias Stone.

Xu Zhimo (January 15, 1897 – November 19, 1931), born in Haining, Zhejiang Province, was a modern Chinese poet and essayist.
Xu Zhimo’s original name was Zhang Xu, with the courtesy name Yaosen. He changed his name to Zhimo while studying in the UK. Pen names he used include Nanhu, Shizhe, Haigu, Gu, Dabing, Yunzhonghe, Xianhe, Shanwo, Xinshou, Huanggou, and E’e. Xu Zhimo was a representative poet of the Crescent Moon School and a member of the Crescent Moon Poetry Society.
