Former Residence of Zhang Zongxiang

The Former Residence of Zhang Zongxiang is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

Built in the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1934), it is located on Cangji Street in Xiasshi Town. The main building has three rooms over two floors, designed in a Western-style brick-and-wood structure, spanning 12.9 meters in width and 11.85 meters in depth, with a total floor area of 150 square meters. Currently, exhibits display the life story of Mr. Zhang Zongxiang, his monographs, some personal belongings, and visual materials.

The new two-story building facing the street was funded and constructed by the People’s Government of Haining City in 1997. In 2000, relevant departments carried out another comprehensive renovation of the residence. There are now four exhibition halls totaling 480 square meters, of which 240 square meters can be used for calligraphy and painting exhibitions.

On the upper floor of the Tie Ruyi Hall, there are three rooms displaying photos and textual descriptions of Mr. Zhang Zongxiang’s life and achievements, as well as his works and items he used during his lifetime. The collection includes nearly 300 items.

Zhang Zongxiang (1882–1965) was a modern scholar and calligrapher. His original name was Si Zeng, but he later admired Wen Tianxiang and changed his name to Zongxiang, with the courtesy name Langsheng and the pseudonym Lengseng, also known as the owner of Tie Ruyi Hall. He was a native of Haining, Zhejiang. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as the director of the Xiling Seal Art Society and the director of the Zhejiang Library, among other positions.

In the 25th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1899), he passed the imperial examination at the county level (xiucai), and in the 28th year (1902), he passed the provincial examination (juren). He taught successively at Kaizhi School in Xiasshi, Tongxi School in Tongxiang, Jiaxing Prefectural Middle School, and Xiushui School, gaining fame for his lectures on geography.
