The White Stone Altar was originally where Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty watched the tidal bore from his imperial boat, and he composed a poem here: “By Zhenhai Pagoda stands the white stone platform (altar); coming here to watch the tide is truly worthwhile. The tides of Tashan arrive in the blink of an eye, and the flow of the Luosha River seems to reverse.”

The altar was later destroyed, and the current White Stone Altar Square was rebuilt in 2002. It integrates large-scale festival events, sightseeing, cultural performances, and recreational activities, serving as the iconic landmark of the Qiantang Tide-Watching Scenic Park. The annual International Qiantang (Haining) Tide-Watching Festival is held here.
