Former Residence of Shi Dongshan
The former residence of Shi Dongshan is a cultural relic protection unit of Haining City.
The former residence of Shi Dongshan is located at No. 35, Dongshan South Road, Xieshi Subdistrict. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, it is categorized as an important modern historical site and representative architecture.
On July 28, 2003, the former residence of Shi Dongshan was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Haining City.
Xieshi Subdistrict: Situated on the Hangjiahu Plain, Xieshi Subdistrict got its name from the presence of East and West Mountains. It was known as Xiashi during the Tang Dynasty but was renamed Xieshi starting from that period. In the sixth year of the Yonghui era of the Song Dynasty (655), Xieshi Town was established; in the eleventh year of the Kaiyuan era (723), Xieshi Market was set up; during the Huichang era (841–844), Xieshi Town was re-established; and in the fourth year of the Jianyan era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1130), Xieshi Stockade was formed. The area has long been known for its strong academic tradition, simple and honest folk customs, and a wealth of notable figures. It features cultural landmarks such as the former residences of Xu Zhimo and Zhang Zongxiang, as well as the Qian Juntao Art Research Museum. Xieshi lanterns are also widely renowned.
