The Old XU Family Residence in Xiashi is located at No. 3, Cangji Lane, Xiashi Subdistrict, No. 10 and No. 17, Lane 125, Hexi Road. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, it is categorized as an ancient building.
On August 11, 2010, the Old XU Family Residence in Xiashi was designated as a cultural heritage site under the protection of Haining City.
Xiashi Subdistrict: Situated on the Hangjiahu Plain, Xiashi Subdistrict was historically known as Xiashi. The name was changed from Xiasi during the Tang Dynasty due to the presence of two mountains, one to the east and one to the west. In the sixth year of the Yonghui era of the Song Dynasty (655), Xiashi Town was established; in the eleventh year of the Kaiyuan era (723), Xiashi Market was set up; during the Huichang era (841–844), Xiashi Town was re-established; and in the fourth year of the Jianyan era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1130), Xiashi Stockade was created. The area has long been known for its strong academic tradition, honest folkways, and numerous notable figures. It is home to cultural landmarks such as the former residences of Xu Zhimo and Zhang Zongxiang, as well as the Qian Juntao Art Research Museum. Xiashi lantern art enjoys widespread fame.
