Zhejiang Eastern Geological Museum
Zhejiang Eastern Geological Museum is a science education base.
The Eastern Geological Museum is situated in Jiaxing’s Nanhu New District at the China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Trade City, occupying the ground floor lobby and fifth floor of the International China–Hong Kong City. With a total area of 12,000 square meters, it is a national youth science education base and also the first large-scale comprehensive geological museum in Zhejiang Province.
The museum has now become the largest geological museum in the Yangtze River Delta in terms of exhibition space, offering the most comprehensive range of exhibits and the finest collection. It integrates a Dinosaur World, Fossil Realm, Second Classroom, and Science Journey, ranking among the top in China with its rich collections and thoughtful design. It is also one of the largest geological museums in the nation in terms of construction scale. Since its opening, the Zhejiang Eastern Geological Museum has been designated as a National Land and Resources Science Education Base by the Ministry of Natural Resources (the only such unit in Zhejiang Province), and authorized as the “Zhejiang Provincial Geological Society Science Education Base” by the Zhejiang Geological Society, among other honors.
The museum currently features 11 exhibition halls: the Dinosaur Hall, Earth Hall, Rocks Hall, Minerals Hall, Fossils Hall, Gems Hall, Volcano Hall, Zhejiang Landscape Screening Hall, Petroleum Exploration Hall, Zhejiang Geological and Landform Subsidence Hall, and Earthquake Evacuation Demonstration Hall. It houses over 12,000 specimens (sets), including 5 that have earned Guinness World Records and 12 that rank first in China. The dinosaur exhibition on the ground floor displays three different species of dinosaurs, allowing visitors to experience a 360°+180° panoramic, multi-angle, and up-close encounter with dinosaur life. It showcases the world’s largest night pearl weighing 8 tons, a 48-meter-long petrified wood, a multiple ichthyosaur fossil from a single mother, and a 9-meter-high crinoid fossil— all rare and highly precious, even across China and Asia.
The Earth Hall simulates the eight major planets of the solar system and highlights popular scientific projects like “Chang’e Flying to the Moon”; the Fossils Hall reconstructs the thriving marine life during the “Cambrian Explosion”; the Rocks Hall displays thousands of rock specimens across three major types—Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary—revealing the magical beauty of the underground world; the Minerals Hall collects over 300 types of mineral crystals, featuring more than 20 exceptional pieces such as the stunning gypsum crystal cave and the crystal-clear fluorite crystals; the Gems Hall exhibits over 200 types of natural gemstones, including treasured national relics like jadeite, nephrite, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, and offers learning opportunities about gemstone appreciation, mining, and processing; the Volcano Hall constructs a volcanic crater with massive natural volcanic bombs to simulate eruption scenes; the Earthquake Hall lets visitors experience seismic events; the Zhejiang Geological and Landform Subsidence Hall showcases various structures like folds and faults. With its vast geological collection and the sheer number of specimens, it ranks as one of the largest geological museums in China.
Through the display of the properties, structures, origins of minerals and rocks, geological evolution history, as well as changes in the natural environment and the evolution of ancient life, the geological museum paints a grand picture of Earth's history. It serves as an important window for primary and secondary school students to understand Earth’s history, biological evolution, and geological changes, while also acting as an engaging, comprehensive classroom that promotes geological knowledge, fosters love for the Earth, and advocates environmental protection.
