Fanli Lake
Fanli Lake is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing City.
Fanli Lake is located at No. 703 Huancheng South Road, Yangliuwan Community, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn period, Fan Li, a minister of the Yue Kingdom, helped King Goujian defeat the Wu Kingdom, then retreated here with Xi Shi to live in seclusion — hence the name Fanli Lake. Currently, the lake is approximately 100 meters long, 15 meters wide, and covers an area of about 5,351 square meters. Originally located by the lake was the Fanli Ancestral Temple, later converted into Jinming Temple, which was built in the first year of the Kaixi era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1025). The temple plaque was transferred from the now-defunct Jinming Temple in Banluo, Haiyan. It underwent several renovations over the years. During the Ming Dynasty, it had three main halls, more than ten corridors, and the Huitian Haiyue Pavilion, making it one of the famous temples in Jiaxing. In the Qing Dynasty, most of the temple structures were destroyed, leaving only the front hall. Fanli Lake is also known as the Tomb of Xi Shi, with legend stating she was buried in the lake. On the north bank, there is a waterside pavilion named “Xi Shi’s Dressing Table,” featuring a hip-and-gable roof and raised-beam architecture. Fanli Lake boasts many stone inscriptions. Inside the wall behind the dressing table is a white jade plaque inscribed with “Shaobo Ancestral Hall.” On the eastern side of the lake stands a stone sculpture of Xi Shi along with a stone carving of the characters “Chen Yu” (meaning “sinking fish”). On the facade of the dressing table is a stone carving of the two characters “Fu Bi” (meaning “floating green”) handwritten by Wen Zhengming. The outer wall features inscriptions such as “Fang Sheng Chi” (meaning “Release Life Pond”) written by Che Darun of the Ming Dynasty and “Tao Zhu Gong Li” (meaning “Tao Zhugong’s Home”) by Chi Guo. Additionally, there is the "Reconstruction of Jinming Temple Stele Inscription" written by Qian Chenqun during the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era, as well as calligraphy works by masters such as Wang Quchang, Tan Jiancheng, and Zhang Zhenwei. Fanli Lake has a long history, simple and classic architectural style, picturesque scenery, and numerous masterpieces, giving it high historical and artistic value. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 1981.
