Hongwen Hall is located within the Jiaxing Governmental Kindergarten at No. 63 Daoqian Street, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. Originally the site where scholars in the Qing Dynasty took the imperial examinations in Jiaxing Prefecture, the courtyard was once shaded by lush ancient trees. In 1928, Hongwen Hall collapsed and was damaged. Local residents raised funds to build a new three-bay, two-story Western-style building, which was repurposed as the Jiaxing Library. In 1937, the building was occupied by Japanese invaders. After the victory in the War of Resistance, it was converted into the office building of the Kuomintang county government, and after the liberation, it became the office site of the Jiaxing Special Commissioner’s Sub-office. Starting in 1953, it has been used as a governmental kindergarten up to the present. The building is a two-story structure facing south, built with a brick-concrete structure, covering an area of 225 square meters, with a total width of 22.5 meters and a depth of 10 meters. It features a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, with Roman columns along the corridors, Baroque-style carvings on the window surrounds, a hip-and-gable roof, and walls constructed from blue bricks. Historically, Hongwen Hall served as the office space for many important institutions. The architecture combines characteristics of both Eastern and Western styles, making it of significant historical, scientific, and artistic value for the study of Jiaxing’s modern history and architecture. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 2001.
