The former site of Jiaxing Silk Spinning Mill
The former site of Jiaxing Silk Spinning Mill is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiaxing City.
The former site of Jiaxing Silk Spinning Mill is located on the eastern shore of South Lake in Nanhu Community, Nanhu Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. It borders Fanggong Road to the east, connects to Nanhu Road to the west, faces Jiaxing Nanhu Middle School to the south, and is adjacent to the Zhejiang Provincial Armed Police General Hospital to the north. Established in the 10th year of the Republic of China (1921), it was formerly the Yujia Branch of Weicheng Co., Ltd. in Jiaxing. After restructuring and renaming, it became Zhejiang Golden Eagle Silk, Hemp Textile, Printing and Dyeing Co., Ltd. The mill originally covered a total area of 310 mu, with a total building area of 14,018 square meters (as of the end of 1988). The site included eight production workshops (scouring, sliver making, roving, spinning, silk weaving, silk reeling, scouring and bleaching, and chemical spinning), as well as a power workshop. The recommended preservation areas include the scouring, spinning, scouring and bleaching, roving, and sliver-making workshops, along with the technical department, semi-finished product warehouse, kindergarten, and main office building, covering a total area of approximately 4,600 square meters. Among these, five workshops are of brick-concrete structure, while the technical department, semi-finished product warehouse, kindergarten, and main office are of brick-wood structure, with exterior walls built from blue bricks. The former site of Jiaxing Silk Spinning Mill is currently the earliest and largest preserved complex of modern industrial architecture in Jiaxing. It is also one of the five oldest state-owned enterprises in Jiaxing after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The site has witnessed a complex history spanning national capital, Japanese puppet control, bureaucratic capital, and the arduous development after the establishment of New China. It holds significant historical and scientific value for studying the development of China’s national industry, especially the silk industry. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site of Jiaxing in 2009.
