Former Site of the Barracks of the Pacification Command of the Republic of China

The former site of the barracks of the Pacification Command of the Republic of China is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing City.

The former site of the barracks of the Pacification Command of the Republic of China is located within the Zicheng city wall of the Rongjun Hospital in Ziyang Community, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), the buildings inside the Zicheng city wall were renovated into the barracks of the 21st Regiment of the Zhejiang Army, commonly known as the “Western Barracks.” In 1937, when Japanese forces occupied Jiaxing, the “Western Barracks” were destroyed in the bombardment. In 1938, the puppet Nationalist government built the “Pacification Command” here, with over 20 barracks of various sizes, all designed in the Japanese architectural style, of which four remain today. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationalist government stationed troops here again, referring to them as the “Western Barracks.” Later, due to military demobilization, Chiang Ching-kuo converted the site into a youth school to train demobilized soldiers and maintain their loyalty, continuing the training of the Youth Army. Two two-story buildings on the northwest side (currently Buildings 1 and 2 of the inpatient department of the Rongjun Hospital) were built during the Japanese occupation of Jiaxing; two single-story buildings on the southeast side (the southernmost Building 29, now a barbershop, and the easternmost Building 27, currently a dormitory for disabled veterans) were constructed after Japan’s surrender. The total floor area of the buildings is 3,831.5 square meters, all of which feature brick-concrete structures, with hip-and-gable roofs and walls built from blue bricks. Building 29 still retains a row of chimney flues from stoves used for heating. These barracks witnessed key historical events of the Anti-Japanese War and various important moments in Jiaxing’s history, serving as powerful physical evidence of the Japanese invasion of China and holding significant historical value. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 2010.
