Gao's Western-style House
Gao's Western-style House is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.
Gao's Western-style House is located at No. 191 Ziyang Street, Ziyang Community, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. Built during the Republican era, it covers a construction area of 1,500 square meters and a courtyard area of 660 square meters. The house faces south with a northern entrance, featuring a brick-and-wood structure and two stories. It spans 30 meters in width and 40.48 meters in depth, with a floor plan laid out in the shape of a “回” (double loop). Each floor has six rooms on the south and north sides, and five rooms on the east and west sides. The eaves are 8.65 meters high, the roof is covered with Western-style tiles, and the walls are coated with cement. The corridors are connected by five arches. The central part of the house encloses a courtyard. The original owner of Gao's Western-style House, Gao Ruli, started his fortune with farmland and later founded the Jiahe Textile Mill. He once served as the president of the Jiaxing County Chamber of Commerce. At that time, this building was widely known across Jiaxing and was the most magnificent residence before liberation. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was used as a transit station for new and demobilized soldiers in Jiaxing, the offices of the Jiaxing Daily, among other purposes. The house overall integrates both Chinese and Western architectural concepts, demonstrating unique architectural artistry that blends the two styles. Once the most splendid residence before liberation, it provides valuable evidence for studying the modern history and architectural characteristics of the Jiaxing region, and holds significant historical and artistic value. It was designated as a Zhejiang Provincial-level Cultural Heritage Site in 2017.
