Jiaxing Mosque

Jiaxing Mosque is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing City.

The mosque is located at No. 469 Huancheng East Road, Chengdong Community, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. It borders Huancheng East Road to the east, Daniantang Street to the south, Ganhutan Street to the west, and Daniantang Back Street to the north, covering an area of 3,000 square meters. Originally built in the 30th year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1602), it underwent two major renovations and expansions during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. It serves as a place of worship for Islam, also known as a prayer hall. The mosque faces east and consists of a gateway, main prayer hall, lecture hall, ablution room, Qingquan Pavilion, ancient steles, and the Women’s Mosque. Its architectural layout is symmetrical, with a rigorous structure that reflects the style of Ming Dynasty gardens in the Jiangnan region. The main prayer hall is connected to the lecture hall and houses four large nanmu (phoebe nanmu) pillars, hence it is also called the “Nanmu Prayer Hall.” Both the lecture hall and the men’s prayer hall feature post-and-lintel and through-tenon style brick-and-wood structures, with verandas facing east. A stone stele is placed inside the pavilion on the east side of the men’s prayer hall, with inscriptions on both sides: the “Jiaxing Prefecture Construction of the True Religion Mosque Stele Inscription” and the “Reconstruction of Jiaxing Prefecture Prayer Mosque Stele Inscription.” With a long history, the mosque stands as evidence of multicultural exchange between China and other regions, holding significant historical value for the study of international exchange history and religious history. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit of Jiaxing in 1981.

Chengdong Community: Located in the southeastern part of Jianshe Subdistrict, Chengdong Community lies in the bustling eastern gateway area, surrounded by streets on all sides. It is a relatively typical community featuring a mix of old and new buildings in a loosely arranged layout with distinct characteristics of the old city. The area around the mosque within the community is a concentrated residential area for the Hui ethnic group. The community spans from Huancheng East Road in the east, Huancheng South Road in the south, Jianguo South Road in the west, to Zhongshan Road in the north.
