Juehai Temple
Juehai Temple is a cultural relic protection unit in Jiaxing City.
Juehai Temple is located at No. 435 Xixi Street, Jianshe Subdistrict, Nanhu District, Jiaxing City. It was originally built in the ninth year of Chunyou during the Southern Song Dynasty (1249). Originally called Baogong Guan, it was converted from a Taoist temple to a Buddhist monastery in the 24th year of Zhiyuan during the Yuan Dynasty (1364), destroyed during wartime in the late Zhiyuan era, and rebuilt in the 15th year of Yongle during the Ming Dynasty (1417). In the 11th year of Yongzheng (1733), it was renamed “Juehai Temple” by imperial decree, and in the 12th year of Yongzheng (1734), an imperial plaque inscribed with “Juehai Temple” was bestowed. The famous Qing Dynasty monk Yulin Lingguo served as its abbot. It belongs to the Linji school of the Chan (Zen) sect of Buddhism. The temple follows a symmetrical axial layout, covering an area of 6,132 square meters. The central axis runs from south to north, sequentially featuring the front hall (Tianwang Hall), the middle hall (Mahavira Hall), and the rear hall (Three Saints Hall). To the west of the central axis, from south to north, are the bell tower, a two-story wing building, and the Ksitigarbha Hall. To the east of the central axis, from south to north, are the storeroom, dining hall, kitchen, and wing buildings. Additionally, there is a Buddhist goods distribution center on the west side of the southern gate. Only the Three Saints Hall in the temple is a Ming Dynasty structure; the rest were rebuilt after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The roof framework of the Three Saints Hall is constructed from nanmu wood. The temple houses an image of Zhu Tianjun (a deity commemorating the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Chongzhen, which is an original artifact), reflecting the national sentiment of restoring the Ming dynasty at the time. With a long history and high influence among Buddhist temples nationwide, Juehai Temple holds significant historical value. It was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit in Jiaxing in 1981.
