Zhuji is the ancient capital of the Yue Kingdom and the hometown of Xi Shi. According to historical records, pearl farming in Zhuji dates back to as early as the Spring and Autumn Period. Legend has it that the peerless beauty Xi Shi was born after her mother “bathed silk in a stream, where a pearl shone upon her body, leading to her pregnancy.”

Today, Zhuji produces over 200 tons of pearls annually. The Zhuji Pearl Market is located in Shanhuzhu Town on the shore of Baita Lake, an area renowned for pearl production. It lies 20 kilometers from the center of Zhuji. Established in June 1985, the market has undergone several relocations and expansions. It has evolved from dealing solely in raw pearls to offering a full range of pearl products and integrated production–sales services. It has now become one of China’s largest and most fully equipped specialized pearl markets. The market covers an area of 11,391 square meters, including a trading hall spanning 3,677 square meters, with 921 fixed stalls and 79 business premises.

The market is fully equipped with service facilities and supported by sound management. It offers more than 200 varieties of goods for trade, including pearls, pearl jewelry, and pearl crafts, as well as pearl-based health products such as pearl powder, pearl capsules, and pearl nutrient solutions.
