According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, on the 19th, a man was reported stranded in Alishan Township, Chiayi County, due to feeling unwell. He was successfully rescued by a Sea Gull helicopter on the 20th and taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries.
The Chiayi County Fire Bureau stated that the man, surnamed Xiao and residing in Chiayi City, was attracted by the scenic beauty of Holy Guanyin Peak in Fengshan Village, Alishan Township. On the 18th, he went there accompanied by a local. As he planned to stay overnight, the accompanying local returned down the mountain early. However, on the 19th, they lost contact with Mr. Xiao, prompting fears of an accident, so the police were notified.
At 4:32 p.m. on the 19th, the fire bureau received a report relayed from the local police station and dispatched six members from the Alishan and Fenqihu fire squads to hike in. They eventually found Mr. Xiao at Holy Guanyin Peak. He was suffering from physical discomfort, which caused pain in both legs and left him unable to walk.
Rescue personnel initially planned to carry him down the mountain on foot, but the steep terrain required climbing using both hands and feet. As a result, the rescuers set up camp and spent the night in the area. On the morning of the 20th, they requested air rescue. Around 10:20 a.m., an Air Rescue Corps helicopter arrived on-site, but due to unstable air currents and terrain restrictions, the hoisting operation could not be carried out, and the mission was called off.
